Dialetti_Italia_72p2.jpg

The most important research fields of this section include: Dialectology and Linguistic Geography (which refer to Turin’s long tradition of atlases, represented today by the Italian Language Atlas, the Linguistic and Ethnographic Atlas of Western Piedmont and the Toponimic Atlas of Mountain Piedmont), Sociolinguistics, Sociology of Languages and Contact Linguistics, General Linguistics and Linguistic Typology – with particular reference to areas such as Morphology, Lexical Semantics and Semantics of Grammar Categories – Acquisitional and Applied Linguistics, Historical Linguistics, Italian Linguistics and the History of the Italian Language. The theoretical and methodological approaches adopted in the various fields derive from the historicist legacy of Benvenuto Terracini’s teaching and extend it in the directions of Functional Linguistics, Theory of Variation, Perceptual Dialectology and Pragmatics.
